Had a nice chat today with Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, in preparation for a preview article on an upcoming solo show. Just a great spirit. A very cool lady. Super talented, too.

Celebrating with a binge listen today.

Here's one of my favorite vids of her, fronting The Heads (the post-David Byrne edition of Talking Heads, which sadly got quashed by Byrne, so they didn't last long):

For those unfamiliar with Concrete Blonde, I highly recommend a hearing.

Went to the local record shop on Friday (in 2015 that's called 'the supermarket') and finally put the £3 Billy Fury CD that has been staring at me for the last month next to my bottled beer, organic harvest bread and chilli flakes.

30 tracks - it compiles all Billy's hits from '59 to '66 - almost like an alternative 60s to the group scene - and it is MAGNIFICENT.

Forget David Cameron and the other 60s dodgers, I'm immersing myself in Fury until the General Election.

I remember when in the sixties it was called "the appliance store".
"a fridge with that LP sir?"

That was an advantage of doing most of my record buying in the late 70s/80s. I knew I was getting desperate to find a record when I has to resort to the appliance or department store sections.

While they're dirt cheap I'm filling my boots with rare and deleted CDs.

However, the one bought yesterday was not dirt cheap - £15 - the most I've ever spent on a single CD!

THE WHO - 'Rarities 1966-1972'.
The 25 tracks were originally divided into two separate LPs:
1. The brilliant, sharp, angular 60s one from '66 to '68 (I got that one).
2. The turgid, languid heavy one from 1970 to 1972 (I didn't get that one!).

Can't see myself ever getting beyond track 15 ('Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' from '68) but the 'Ready, Steady, Who' EP and their 45s from the 60s are as good as it ever got.

Momma Yo!

;D  Those reviewers were wrong when they said the Raspberries were just copying everybody. I never heard anybody else say Momma Yo! or Momma Momma Yo Yo! for that matter.

Those guys have bad clothes and bad hair cuts, the 1970s (see also 1970s Who, solo Beatles etc.) were truly awful!

I bought Big Star's (often linked with these guys in the music press) first album the other day, it was cheap!, and even though it came out relatively early in the decade, 1972, there was a huge sense that it would have been a whole lot better if it had been made just four years earlier.
I found the recording far too clean and ultimately quite soul-less.

Yo momma so fat her navel gets home ten minutes before she does.

Yo momma so fat that when she bungee jumped she tore down the bridge.

I guess Eric Carmen invented yo momma jokes.    ;D

Yo momma so stupid that she waited for the stop sign to say GO.

Yo momma so fat the army uses her underwear as parachutes.

I attended a taping of 'The Midnight Special' once. It was actually just the host, Helen Reddy ('I Am Woman'), doing a couple of songs and introducing acts that would be edited in later.

Another brush with greatness.
