Right, Kev.  He was a master guitarist and the reason my blues guitar teacher, Ian Buchanan, began taking jazz guitar lessons at the time I was taking blues lessons.

Joe Pass had a difficult life.  I consider it an amazing feat that he was able to master guitar as he did.

Kev, Joe Pass was a fan of Django Reinhardt.  Watch what he could do with just two fingers...

...Django Reinhardt suffered extensive burns over half his body in a fire when he was 18.  He lost the use of his left ring finger and pinky.

Ian Buchanan had an extensive record collection of both Django Reinhardt and Joe Pass.

Hi Baz mate, Yeah, a mate of mine plays in the style of Django, sort of Gypsy Jazz, he does gigs in restaurants etc. I really admire Django, but I prefer Joe Pass or Wes Montgomery, my own personal taste.

That lick he does at 0;48 to 1;04 is sublime

Ian Buchanan had a 1971 L-5 when I was taking lessons (1972-1973).  I tried playing his, but it had a jazz neck, a bit thin for me to play comfortably.  And new L-5s were about $6,000 at the time  So I found this 1959 Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster which had a standard neck (1 - 11/16" at the nut)...

I realized a few years later that Steve Howe played a Switchmaster here...

Look at what that jazz guitar can do!  In the right hands, of course   :)

Kev, the Switchmaster remains my favorite guitar.  The neck is perfect for me and the action is just right.  I have flatwounds on that guitar.

It's basically an L-5 but with a laminated maple top to cut down on feedback, three pickups and that 4-position slide switch to choose each pickup individually or all three pickups.  They are Patent Applied For Humbucking pickups.  I paid $750 for the guitar in 1972.  It was in near-mint condition and still is today.  Gibson didn't make too many of them.  I was lucky to find it.

The L-5s have gone back to necks 1 11/16" at the nut.  Ian's was 1 9/16" at the nut.

Kev, Steve Howe is playing his Switchmaster with the selector switch set at 3  -  the bridge pickup...

He still has that guitar...

He's taken good care of his too.

Kev, this video demonstrates what the 1959 Switchmaster can do...

That is the true color of my sunburst ES-5 Switchmaster.  The photo of mine that I posted accentuated the red in the sunburst because of the flash.

She's a beauty Baz, and that Jazz tone neck pickup is like butter. $750 ?   What a great investment !

You can get so many tones with that Switchmaster, Kev.  Set the switch to ALL and adjust the tone and volume controls to get combinations of any two pickups with bias toward either, etc.

I was lucky to find it and buy it for that price.

I left the shop so satisfied I'm on my way.   ;)

Back to They Don't Know...

Kirsty MacColl wrote and recorded it in 1979...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACa4TlVod_w" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACa4TlVod_w</a>

Tracey Ullman had a top ten hit with it in 1983...

TOTP

But Kirsty MacColl sang the "Baby!" in Tracey Ullman's recording.

I've always loved John Lee Hooker's growly voice, esp. in this song:

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning, and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you said, "Good-bye."
