Your song choice for a 14 song 'The Beatles'
« on: September 21, 2021, 02:11:36 PM »

If 'The Beatles' had been a 14 song single album, what would your songs be? Mine would be -

Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
While my guitar gently weeps.
Happiness is a warm gun.
Blackbird
Martha my dear.

Sexy Sadie
Everybodies got...
Savoy Truffle
Yer Blues
I'm so tired.
Mother Natures Son
Birthday.

----------

Ob la di ob la da could have been released as a stand alone single. If Marmalade could get it to number 1....

George gets two songs. However the standard Ringo song is not included. But he would not have complained.

John would not be happy that Revolution 9 is not included. But that together with other leftovers could be released another time.

Revolution 9 could be the B side to Ob la di ob la da. Beatles B sides were a big thing.

That would be a real contrast. Believe John disliked Ob la di ob la da as much as Paul disliked Revolution 9.

Wonder what George Martin's 14 songs would be.

Understand he wanted it as a 14 song album. He probably had a lot of influence in song selection if there were disputes.

If 'The Beatles' had been a 14 song single album, what would your songs be?

This was harder than I thought, but this would be my list. Some of these are sentimental choices rather than selections that are based on objective musical merit. For example, my kids always loved The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, hence that song is close to my heart.

Back in the USSR
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (yes, I'm one of the one who likes this)
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
Blackbird
Piggies
Rocky Raccoon
I Will
Mother Nature's Son
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Revolution 1
Honey Pie

Wonder what George Martin's 14 songs would be.

I'd love to know what his choices would be.

Wow. That is different to mine.

A beefed up & superior version of Revolution 1 was released the same year. So would have left the slower version off the album.

Liked Rocky Racoon as a boy. Now think it's a bit of a doodle.

Helter Skelter may have suited 'Let it Be'.

Honey Pie but no Dear Prudence? BITUSSR flows perfectly into a John classic.

Bungolow Bill does flow perfectly into WMGGW. The problem is the other 3 minutes!

I prefer the slower version, although I like both.

That was one of the "sentimental" choices. Another one my kids liked, so it has fond memories attached. :)

Hm, you make an excellent point. I'd probably swap out Honey Pie in favor of Dear Prudence, then.

It's so hard to make any choices in regard to the Beatles, because I honestly do love just about all of their songs, and my personal choices for lists such as these fluctuate on a near-daily basis.

A lot believe there were too many songs. Plenty of songs that fans generally do not like. George Harrison said himself there were songs which should have been B sides or scrapped completely. But ego's took over.

The difficult part has always been cutting down the released album by over 50%.

Suppose if the songs were recorded during 'The White Album' sessions, they have a right to release them. On other albums, lesser songs would have been dropped.

What was the exact reason for the decision to do the double album?

You know, I was approaching this more as a "what would your own personal 14-track White Album look like" and not as "what 14 tracks would you have included on a 14-track commercial release," which was, I believe, your query, Bulldog.

My list for a 14-track commercial release would comprise a different set of songs. I'll have to give that some thought.

Was approaching it as The Beatles producing the best single album possible. Which would have been their aim if deciding on a single album. But appreciate over 50 years on, people will choose songs for personal reasons.

Good question.

Don't know if that was the original aim. Or it morphed into a double as all members were very productive.

Topping Revolver & Sgt Pepper would have been tough. The Beatles may have decided to do something different.

I think you had it earlier. They had a lot of songs and George said the egos wouldn’t let things get dropped.

I thought this would be easy as I have a cut down White Album playlist. But it’s got 20 songs on it  ha2ha

A single length version  of Revolution 9 would have been worth it if only for the mental image of George Martin having to edit it down.

Also heard they had to release a certain amount of songs under their contract. Releasing 30 in one go, got them nearer that target.

Keep trying. You will get there. But may want to change it the following day!

George was getting more confident & may have demanded his songs be included. He had good arguments for two of them. Even Ringo may have insisted his song is included.

John & Paul reacted by becoming even more productive than usual.

I’ve done this before on another thread. It’ll be interesting to find it and see if my views have changed.

Someone had a good time ringing those cow bells during EGSTHEM&MM.
