I look to first-hand reports from you and others to gauge what is really happening in Russia and Ukraine.

Though some things in Russia concern me directly, I prefer do not read and talk about war, too tired of it, too tired of constant anxiety. Russia indeed is slipping into the middle ages and it really scares me. By the way, GDP of Texas is the same as Russian ones

I partly agree on thread title. In global context the title is right (also due to the economic component), but in local one it is false (indeed Russia invaded Ukraine).
So it depends how you look at this war.
You can change the title, don't you? I'm not sure.

It's not really a war Dmitry. Russia invaded Ukraine after saying they wouldn't. Ukraine is not attacking Russian cities; it is defending Ukraine.

During last several months Ukraine is attacking Russian cities with missiles and drones (which are not Ukrainian made). Of course, this is nothing compared to what Russia is doing in Ukraine. I'm afraid it will get worse, and it will be more casualties from both sides. Putin does not pity not only the civilian population of Ukraine, he does not pity the inhabitants of Russia either. So if it isn't war yet, it will be sooner or later.

Dmitry, you only recently left Russia but you still have family there and so I still count you as a source of first-hand information.  The RN in my office has family in Poland near the Ukraine border.  I count on them for first hand information too.

Maybe not as far back as the middle ages but certainly back to a 1940 way of thinking and behaving...

It's not a war, it's an invasion.
Ukraine will never bomb Moscow or St Petersburg, can you imagine Red square being bombed? I doubt it will ever be a war.

In the 90s there was freedom in Russia and there were many independent media. It was interesting to live before Putin.

I too don't trust the US news, let's face it it's either left or right.

I go to the BBC for world news. They're not owned by Murdoch, or the advertisers. They are funded by a TV license.

Their website is excellent. Lots of podcasts. Plenty of Beatle stuff etc. (bonus)
