At least he's clean there. The unwashed Paul of the greasy hair and ratty beard is not a thing of beauty. I don't think any of the Beatles were attractive at the time of LIB. Too much stress and chemicals.

The question raised by this thread is "why did Paul purposely make himself look so ugly?" I don't think it was purposeful. I think the various stresses in his life came out in his appearance. Also, he may have been trying to hide a bit. In his bio, he says the beard and ratty clothes were a great asset in keeping people from recognizing him. I think he didn't want to talk so much then as he usually did.

He went from having cool hair on that TV show playing "Hey Jude," to that natty-ass look with bed-head, not washed in days look ... IN A MOVIE. Definitely must have been the chemicals...

LOL! I wish you'd commented on this yesterday, Buttmunker, but I've already returned Paul's book to the library. As best I can determine, he was sneaking around incognito with Linda in New York in 1968, so the ratty beard came in before they started filming. Paul scholars, do you know the precise date?

All of them were frazzled after the White album, and there had been enough bickering to depress all of them. I think Paul just took a holiday from shaving, and good for him! I like it that he said, screw it, I don't care how I look. Personally, I would go bananas if I had to look good for people all the time.

EDIT: Found it. Crummy beard sprouted by October 1968.

Paul could definately pull off the beard look. I think he looks cool with the beard in Let it be. You should have named the topic something different because no one would make themselves ugly on purpose. Its silly to think Paul woke up one morning and said "I don't want to be attractive anymore. I'm sick of it. I think I'm going to make myself ugly for awhile" Its just silly.It was a style people were doing 1968-1972. Paul was the first of The Beatles to grow the power beard and the other three followed his lead and grew it out summer of 69. Just because a full unkept beard is looked down upon in our era doesn't mean it was always like that.

I think the Band influence is it. Their influence was peaking about the time of Paul's beard. Even Dylan grew a kinda beard.

Paul oughta think about growing that beard back out. Ringo's looks good.

I bet Yoko could grow one too.

but what's the excuse of the greasy, bed-head? People who know they're going to be filmed often wash their hair. He might have been depressed and said "f*** it," there was a lot of bad stuff going on in '68 --- drugs and the Apple Boutique two small examples.
