I think I would have to agree with your thoughts....Seems to fit them well!  At first I thought you meant a season
in that case I would say..

Summer-John
Fall-George
Winter-Paul
Spring-Ringo

Interesting question....!  (when I first read the title of the thread, I thought you were talking about chemical elements... hehe! ;D )

I think the same way as you, Colleen

John - Fire ...  well pretty obvious why
George - Earth ... Octie and I wrote a Beatles story where George was rather "earthie"  :P
Paul - water...  Process of elimination really, but put it this way- you will always feel his presense.
Ringo - Air... he is always there, he is small , hard to see, but very important  ;)

Well, actually, Ringo was - WATER - he is CANCER
This is a cardinal=radical sign, considered to be female, sensitive, reserved, a strategically thinking leader.
George - WATER - he is PISCES
This is a mobile=lively sign, considered to be female, sensitive, reserved, a strategically thinking interlocutor.
Paul - AIR - he is GEMINI
This is a mobile=lively sign, considered to be male, thinking, energetic, active, an idealistic interlocutor.
John - AIR - he is LIBRA
This is a cardinal=radical sign, considered to be male, thinking, energetic, active, an idealistic leader.

this is what they are and if you give it a thought you will agree with the definitions.

This is just for fun, but it's interesting to see that many significant figures in Paul's life were Libras--John Lennon, his wife Linda, and his mother.

That said, I'm a Libra too.  *silly happy dance* :P :P :P

The fact that they were all AIR and WATER tells us the following:
AIR - John and Paul - is compatible with AIR (each other), (certainly). That is why the two of them could easily collaborate at first. Two AIR signs meeting give each other full freedom and liberty of action and movement, believing that there should be no restrictions and limitations or at least very few. This combination or merger can create intellectual, emotional and spiritual uplifting or rise. But AIR can become unfresh, stuffy and polluted if there`s no wind of change, as well as under certain conditions it can become a hurricane. Both individualities have equal opportunities to make their choice. So in their case, they may have begun to suffocate in each other`s company.
AIR is also compatible with FIRE, but it needs patience to combine with EARTH and WATER. Hence some difficulties in relations with George (especially) and Ringo.

WATER - George and Ringo - is compatible with WATER. So they had no problems with each other. When WATER meets WATER this can result in an endless flow of inspiration falling into a great ocean of enlightenment. However it can also drip out into stagnant water with no way out. Water slakes thirst but if beyond control it can become a destructive torrent. Both individualities have equal opportunities to make their choice. So George desperately needed this way out.
WATER is also compatible with EARTH, but it needs patience to combine with FIRE and AIR.

The signs that are favourable for each other:
GEMINI+LIBRA (Paul+John), CANCER+PISCES (Ringo+George). However, they are not in harmony and they do not create a solid, unbreakable combination.
The signs that are negative to each other and inharmonious:
GEMINI-PISCES (Paul-George!!!), CANCER-LIBRA (Ringo-John!). However, they are not in opposition to each other, and not set against each other.

Quite interesting, I suppose.
