Thanks, Moog.  I bought that Country Gentleman about 30 years ago.

I bought the Rick Custom '63 new about 8 years ago.  Only a Rickenbacker 12-String can make a sound like this...

love that sound on If I needed someone

I just learned something, sorry for being so naive, I always thought of double neck guitars when 12 string was mentioned, your picture of yours allowed me to get educated.  I feel kind of stupid but hey, very old dogs can learn new tricks.

As the video mentioned, If I Needed Someone was recorded with George Harrison's 1964 Rickenbacker 360-12 which had some changes from the 1963 model including rounded cutaways and an R tailpiece...

That guitar went missing after the 1966 Candlestick Park concert.

I prefer the esthetics of the 1963 model.  I'm happy that Rickenbacker issued a limited edition reproduction which I'm fortunate to own.

George recorded A Hard Day's Night with his '63 version...

And he had it when he met Pattie Boyd...

There are also double neck guitars with one neck 12 string and one 6. Don’t see them too much after the 70s though.

so educate me further, the player, treats the two strings as one while playing?

Yep.  Each string is doubled with the two strings very close together.  So you play it much like a normal guitar.  Although my experience playing them is that you need to impart quite a bit more pressure than on a six string so you have to get used to it. Good for chord work, arpeggios and riffing. Not so good for bluesy leads as bending the strings is harder and the extra force needed on the strings slows your fingers down a bit.

This video shows standard tuning of a 12-string guitar...

https://youtu.be/CUk68Sx0vNY

Some 12-string guitars are easier to play than others.  The Rickenbacker 360-12 is one of the easier guitars to play.  So is my Guild JF30-12...

Stringing these guitars with lighter gauge strings also helps.

George put a capo at the 7th fret to play If I Needed Someone, like this...

You've seen Justin Hayward play a Guild JF30 on Question...

https://youtu.be/9YHIRGYlLlU

He made it easier to fret by using an open-C tuning.

You can get an effects pedal that makes a six string sound like a 12 string, our lead guitarist used to use this on the song needles and pins it actually sounded just like a Rick even though he was using a Gibson Les Paul.
Good enough for live performance anyway.

You just reminded me about the VOX ToneLab I bought a few years ago...

I had enough trouble making my Country Gentleman even sound like guitar with it!   ha2ha

George had much better luck with his 360-12 and a VOX volume pedal on I Need You...

Yes I’ve used that. Much easier on me poor fingers.

Do you still find much difference in playing a 12 versus 6 string HG? I only played 12 strings for short periods  so maybe I didn’t ever properly get my hands and fingers used to it. I found for instance that, even though my fingertips were calloused from playing six string, the double string could hurt like blazes at first.

My first 12-string was a Gibson B-25-12, Moog...

The action was high and the neck was wide and it hurt my fingers to play it.  I still have that guitar but haven't played it in years.  The Rick and Guild are made much better with standard necks and low action.  With light gauge strings, they're very easy to play.

I have to say that when I heard the Searchers version of When You Walk In The Room in early 1964, I fell in love with the sound of the 12-string guitar and I knew I had to get one some day.

Thank-you, Jackie DeShannon, for writing one of the most beautiful and powerful songs I ever heard...
