Very close, but Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out just shades it for me.

I'm going to be boringly conventional and go with "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields."   :B

What songs would have been better to pair up with them Kevin ?

We can work it out is far superior to Day Tripper IMO. PL/SF should win, the only reason it might not win here is overexposure.

I know Paperbackwriter/ Rain isnt a double A-side but had it been i think it would have been strong competition for any of these mentioned.

I'm sure I read many yeatrs ago that Daytripper was the A side and WCWIO was the B side, but was upgraded due to constant airplay. But the little looking I did just now says it was planned as a double A side. ????

Day Tripper/Drive my Car
Eleanor Rigby/Got to Get You into My Life
Something/I want you(She's so Heavy)

I read it was the other way round and that they wrote it quickly as an attempt to create a matching b-side to We can work it out, but then John argued it was just as strong, if not stronger than it and so in agreement with Paul they bumped it up to a double A-side

According to Ian Macdonald, "Day Tripper was scheduled as their next single until the recording of "We Can Work It Out" a few days later. Arguments over which was to be given preference (Lennon wanted "Day Tripper") led to the single being marketed as the first 'double A-side.' Airplay and point-of-sale requests soon proved "We Can Work It Out" more popular."[p.149]

The 'upgraded' story is probably a writer's muddle derived from "Day Tripper" being originally intended for the A-side and "We Can Work It Out" turning out to be the more popular of the two songs.  :)

^Macdonald's account jibes with most others I've read, but of course that doesn't prove anything conclusively.  :)

Yeah there's no way of knowing how truthful the post is that i put up, but at least our accounts  seems to settle what Kevin was pointing out, that it was upgraded to A-side and initially had been planned as a Aside/Bside  ;) so i would say job well done Geoff  ;D ;D
