I just stumbled across this article and wanted to share it. It's the first specific breakdown of the cover art I've seen. Interesting!

That’s really interesting. I hadn’t seen it comprehensively set out like this either.  Lots of people who are forgotten now.

Yeah, that's great, especially the little explanations of what these people did.

There's another site where someone tried to find all the orignal photos used for the sleeve.

This shows that often the original photos were colorised or the colors were changed. It makes you realise that the Sgt Pepper cover was a planned work of art.

This one was new to me. Wonder if there's a guide to the cover art for this, too. I'm curious as to why they chose Sgt. Pepper to imitate. If I get a sec I'll look that up.

In fact there's a distint lack of black people in the Beatles.

Thankfully Billy Preston righted the ship.

Incidentally, Gandhi was prepared for the cover but was refused by the record company as too politically sensitive.

As was Hitler.

Given their musical interests I’m surprised there wasn’t someone like Big Bill Broonzy or even Little Richard. 

Maybe word got back to them that Ali purportedly referred to them as  “little f**gots” after meeting them.

Yeah I was too lazy to re-find this site so thanks for posting it.

It is a truly amazing and extremely successful attempt to source all the photos.

Some of the waxworks heads don't seem to match but the rest is fine.

The list is interesting too.

Alfred Jarry (inventor of pataphysical science) is on there and so is Richard Crompton (author of the Just William books that John loved).

Those are both excellent points, and ones that never occurred to me but that now seem obvious. I'm now very curious to learn more about the second point. It seems like Little Richard in particular would have been chosen by one of them.

You could name any number of people who aren't on there and who could be. Elvis, Buddy Holly or Carl Perkins for example.

At the time of Pepper I don't think the Beatles were particularly interested in underlining their rock and roll roots. It was a time of expanding horizons. Philosophers, swamis, writers and visual artists were put more to the fore.

There were a few throwbacks to their youth and the quirky inclusion of Dion (presumably more a joke than anything else).

Incidentally, quite a few of the artists were chosen by Peter Blake, the sleeve designer, and not by the Beatles themselves.

So did Liston, or at least that was the sentiment behind his refusal to meet them. lol Maybe Ali would have refused too if he'd known he was going to defy the odds and win.
