Juke Box jury
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:14:32 AM »

I'm reading Lewisohns 'The Complete Beatle Chronicles' and came to the part where John made a guest appearance on the BBC TV show Juke Box Jury in 63'. The show had a panel that would vote 'hit' or 'miss' on new songs that were released. I thought it was hysterical that in typical John fashion, he voted 'miss' to all of the songs. The tunes were -

'Southend' - Cleo Laine
'So Much In Love' - The Tymes
'Devil In Disguise' - Elvis (the song John said he sounded like Bing Crosby)
'The Click Song' - Miriam Makeba
'On Top Of Spaghetti' - Tom Glaser
'Flamenco' - Russ Conway
'First Quarrel' - Paul and Paula
'Dont Ever Let Me Down' - Julie Grant
'Lies' - Johnny Sandon
'Too Late To Worry' - Richard Anthony
'Just One Look' - Doris Troy (would latter be signed by Apple)

Due to Johns influence, the other panelists voted 'Miss' to all of the singles (except Elvis) also. What a bastard. Lol.

Heh, John would've panned his own songs, lol.

I dunno why he took a dislike to this track - it's great early R'n'B song which seems a lot like the sort of thing the group would had been in to - they had covered a lot of girl group material by this time by groups such as The Donays, Shirelles, Cookies etc.

Perhaps he was just in a bad mood - if memory serves, John had to catch a helicopter flight afterwards to join up with the others for a gig that night. (might be wrong on that though!)

I dont have the book in front of me, but i'm almost 100% sure that your correct. As a matter of fact, I believe the other three played a show that evening without John.

I got the book out! John's Juke Box Jury appearance was filmed on 22 June 1963 - after filming finished at 9:15pm, he was whisked away to Battersea Airport where he was flown by helicopter to Abergavenny, arriving at 9:50 PM,  just in time for their performance! Phew!

The Beatles later made up the whole panel when they appeared together in December 1963.

Here is a piece I wrote about 'Juke Box Jury':

John recorded his one and only appearance on Juke Box Jury without his fellow Beatles on Saturday 22 June 1963. The BBC TV show was a popular programme, hosted by disc jockey David Jacobs in which a panel of celebrities commented on a selection of new record releases, deciding which would be a hit and which a miss. Wow! Thanks Bill, that's amazing news for me. I grew up in Abergavenny and did not know that at all! All my first toy cars (And records for that matter) were bought from that town hall! They hold a market there a couple of times a week to this day. Is there any pics of this anywhere?

Dear Apple Beatle,
My good friend Bryn Yemm is in that photo. Bryn and Anne now live in Florida. Here is the result of the interview I did with him:
Bryn Yemm & the Beatles.

I recall the day of June 22, 1963 at Abergavenny Ballroom where I spent the day/night with the Beatles...I still have an original copy of the album "Please Please Me" which John, Paul, George and Ringo signed. It is now worth £10,000.

I was a local celebrity in Abergavenny from playing at all the dancehalls and clubs with my band, I recall when the Beatles hit the stage everyone flooded to the stage maybe 15 deep, they were very exciting and played a great set with

It seems that John's judgment was spot on. Not one of those records charted.

I was just about to say the same thing, BM. I am a sixties music obsessive and I have not heard most of these songs!

Shame about Paul and Paula though- I always thought they would have had a bright future in the music industry if it wasn't for the drugs, groupies, and infightiong. ;)
