Right?!?  ;D

I think I need a Help! or AHDN fix.

There are two movies Id like you to watch Kathy, both recent and both directed by Robert Eggers. Id like your opinion about them if you would.

The Witch
The Lighthouse

Threads. Very unsettling.

Is that the British one about nuclear war?

Yes, it is.

That’s heavy. I watched it when it came out. It was about the same time as The Day After. But a lot bleaker.

I saw The Day After when it was first aired on TV.  When it was over, I remember saying to myself "Why did I watch this?"

I would like to suggest what might have been the first of the aftermath of nuclear war films On The Beach (1959)...

Nevil Shute's 1957 novel, by the same name, is a great read.  The movie departed in many ways from the novel but that's Hollywood for you!  Still, the movie is enjoyable without all the graphic destruction, radiation sickness, and death.

Moog and Kevin, much of the story takes place in Australia and Waltzing Matilda makes up a good part of the musical score.

I saw The Lighthouse. Can’t say I liked it that much. Good acting and atmospherics but found it a bit of a slog.

There’s the famous quote from Ava Gardner that they’d come to the right place to film the end of the world.  I suppose Australia wasn’t the most exciting place in the 50s.

It was assigned reading for us too, Kev, right after the Cuban Missile Crisis.  Not too long after, this movie came out...

Fail safe is a great movie. Saw it one afternoon on TV and didn’t expect much. Absolutely riveting.

1964 was a great year for nuclear war movies.  Same as Fail-Safe but different was Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb...

I finally watched these, nimrod. I enjoyed both films. I liked The Witch better; it was easier to follow, and the pace was a bit faster. The ending was particularly creepy.

I found The Lighthouse a bit slower, but the acting blew me away. So good! I don't think I'd ever have recognized Willem Dafoe if I hadn't seen the cast information, and I'd sort of written Robert Pattinson off as just a pretty boy. Boy, was I wrong. I remember learning about folie à deux (shared psychosis) back in school. It was fascinating to see it portrayed in a movie.

What was your own opinion of these?

I've binged the entire Netflix series Squid Game and Clickbait as well, and both were absorbing. Now I'm behind on work.  :)

Im glad you enjoyed them both.
I have friends who hated both movies LoL. I find it a bit weird that a young director with 2 films under his belt enters into my top 10 films. I absolutely loved both of them. I agree The Witch is better, just. That Black Philip eh !!
Both films I felt I was actually there they were so absorbing. I thought you might like The Lighthouse the most because of the proximity to the ocean.
Eggers is working on a Viking film called The Northmen and another remake of Nosferatu, the old Vampire film.

You thought correctly.  :)

Oh, I'll have to keep an eye out for the latter. Sounds good!

I also watched, for about the 10th time, 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. I can identify so well with Katarina, Julia Stiles's character. Great fun, and a just a little romantic.  :)
