It seems strange now.
I worked Liverpool in the 70s and there was no Beatles tours or anything like now.
In fact it was like they didn't acknowledge the Beatles. They even demolished the cavern.
I went to find Johns house once and I walked down Penny Lane. I found the shelter on the roundabout.
Strange when now there's a tourist industry based on the Beatles.

Moogmodule:  Thanks for the definitive answer.

Now I think God must be a time traveler because He then would have had to go back in time and create John Lennon in order for He Himself to be created.

Loco Mo, your question reminded me of a query someone submitted to a Catholic priest in my diocese who has a website to which he encourages people to submit questions. Someone asked him if he thought God could make a rock so heavy that even he (i.e., God) could not lift it. I believe his reply was "no."

That surprises me; I always assumed anything in Liverpool was a Beatles attraction right from the get-go.

It must have been nice to be there before everything got touristy.

Normandie:  Usually when people ask a question like this, they have a goal to disable the speaker's position as to the validity of God's Existence.  If He can't do something, no matter how illogical, then He is not God.

To my mind, these are word games that serve to obfuscate an issue.  And the implied arguments tend to be circular.  That means if you ask a question, another question will be asked in return, rather than answered in the first place.

You might rephrase the question like this:  "Can God do something that He cannot do?"  Does the questioner really expect a sensible answer to an illogical question?

I’d heard that. Seems very odd now. Apparently there was resistance from the city council even to put some formal commemoration of them, like a statue. As if at that point Liverpool was embarrassed by them. And now it’s Beatle city. When I was there ten years ago everywhere you looked there were tour buses, shops, yellow submarine tours etc etc.

I do remember back in the 70s Liverpool had a very left wing socialist council.
I'm not sure whether that would affect things Beatles but maybe the mayor hated their music.
You would think even a left-wing government would have taken advantage of the tourism industry not just the Beatles but Brian Epstein's stable of acts.

I just stumbled across this short "Walking Around Liverpool" video clip, and it made me think of this post. Hope the link works:

I think they realized that despite the breakup that the Beatles popularity was ongoing and very strong.  And I imagine there must have been many visitors to Liverpool.

So it's just a matter of the Marketplace stepping in and doing its thing.

The darn mask mandates are returning, including at my part-time job.  :P

So, making lemonade out of lemons, or trying to, anyway:

And yes, I found a Normandie group, so these posts will be stopping.

I was unpacking my ocean liner books earlier while my daughter watched TV, and I couldn't resist showing her various titles and chattering about them. Her eyes were definitely glazing over.  ha2ha  But that's OK; back when she was a teen I listened patiently to all her tales of 5SOS and One Direction and the Jonas Brothers.

So, making lemonade out of lemons, or trying to, anyway:

This reminded me of when I'd bought a floppy sunhat to wear on a beach on a vacation back in 2014. I made the mistake of asking my kids "Do I look totally stupid in this?"

Big mistake.

Monica, who was 16 at the time, promptly replied, "Well, you don't look TOO stupid."

 ha2ha   ha2ha   ha2ha

I was like, "Well—OK, then! As long as I don't look TOO stupid."

Lesson learned: Don't as a teenager for their opinion unless you really want to hear it.  icon_cool

We all still laugh about that.

A floppy sun hat is not only practical beachwear but, in my opinion, it makes a woman look stunning...

Of course, one can go overboard resulting in the opposite effect...

That was exactly the style of hat I had. But I doubt anyone would think I looked stunning.  ;)

I wonder what the halfway point between "Not too stupid" and "stunning" is. . . Maybe "mediocre"?  icon_cool

I'm not only a Beatles geek and an ocean liner geek but also a psychology geek. In addition to just a geek in general.

Fortunately, my older daughter is a psychology geek, too. It's so great. We have these great nerdy psychology discussions. ;D She starts graduate school in a week or so. I can't wait to see  what her textbooks are.

Actually, I need to watch the Stanford Prison Study movie (2015), of which Zimbardo disapproved. My Netflix queue is getting a bit unwieldy. Beatles first, though!

I’ve heard a lot in recent time that the Stanford experiment wasn’t all it’s been presented as. That the ones running it interfered so that’s it’s hard to draw conclusions from it. Interested what the facts are on it.

Interesting. I've never heard that, but the study is really presented only as a quick topic in social psychology courses, much like Stanley Milgram's famous obedience project. And I haven't heard much about the movie, just that Zimbardo wasn't happy with it.

My curiousity was piqued enough by your statement that I ordered Zimbardo's book The Lucifer Effect. Given that my job is in psychology publishing I don't tend to gravitate toward that for pleasure reading, so it's likely going to go at the bottom of my to-be-read stack.

Quick postscript: I did find this article—https://www.insidehighered.com/print/news/2018/06/20/new-stanford-prison-experiment-revelations-question-findings—which references the book Story of a Lie by Thibault Le Texier. But I view Le Texier and his book with skepticism because, after studying and working in the field of psychology publishing for more than 30 years, I've never heard of him.

Hmm, I should probably email my older daughter all this instead of going on and on here.  ;)
