I believe since the Beatles had used the 4 track they just saw no need to change it. In an interview about their recording of Sgt. Pepper Paul or Ringo said it kept them honest whatever that meant in reguards to you just could not flick a switch and over dub with a bunch of "extra" tracks? The 4 track system was most labourous. :o
