Lennon FActs!
« on: March 05, 2004, 04:59:59 PM »

I'm sure you guys know 75% of these!

John Lennon was born to Julia Lennon after 30 hours of labor

John was expelled from school for misbehavior at age 5

John was raised by his mother's sister, Mimi Smith

Later in life, John discovered that he had dyslexia

By age 15, John was a big fan of Elvis

Lennon decided to become a "rocker" after hearing Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel"

Without glasses, John was legally blind

Lennon's mother taught him how to play an old spanish guitar like a banjo

The first tune that John learned to play on the guitar was Fats Domino's "Ain't
that A Shame"

The first instrument John was given was an accordian; his second was a harmonica

John formed his first band, The Quarry Men, in 1957

John was 15 when he met Paul McCartney, who was 14

John didn't want George Harrison in the Quarry Men, at first, because he was too young

It has been reported that John got a big thrill out of shoplifting when he was young

John's mother died after being hit by a car

John invited Rod Murray and Stu Sutcliffe to join the Band

Stu Sutcliffe named the band "The Beetles." John said, "It needs an 'A'"

"The Beatles" was the name of a gang in Marlon Brando's motorcycle romance, "The Wild One"

The Beatles didn't conform to the standard, having one star and a backing band like "Buddy Holly and the Crickets"

The Beatles experimented with names throughout 1959. At one point they were called "Johnny and the MoonDogs"

Their first LP was "Please Please Me"

Their last was "Let it Be"

His favorite George Harrison tune was "Within You Without You" and he once said that "Something" was the best song on Abbey Road.

I've never seen the movie, but I always thought (or heard) that The Beatles in that movie were actually the girls. I dont know for sure though.

John' mother's death really messed him up for awhile. He wrote a bunch of songs inspired by her, as she was a pretty fabulous woman. "Julia" is simply gorgeous, and it kind of shows how he once depended on his mother's memory as his muse but was now saying, "now I have Yoko." Also, "Mother" is a classic. F*cking amazing song. "My Mummy's Dead" is pretty shivery...

Does anyone else, besides myself, feel that "This Boy" might be directed toward the loss of his mom? In any case, those are a few John facts- that he wrote some amazing songs for his mom.

Yeah, absolutely, "This Boy." I'm looking at it more figuratively, instead of literally. I see "that boy" as the perpetrator, the agressor, the one who caused the loss- which could have been the dude in the car who killed, her, could have been his "stepfather", could have been anyone.

I also hear his loss in lines like, "I've got every reason in the world to be sad, because I just lost the only girl I had..." (I hope that's close to the original)...I mean, they sound like love songs, but that was his gift. He could write a song that looked as thought it was designed for one thing, and its meaning was hidden behind so many metaphors. He even used cliche phrases so that he could fool people into thinking the meaning was one thing, when really it was hidden behind those cliches and you didn't even know it.

We now look like those Beatles freaks JOHN so much hated that started seeing things in their songs... It could be, yes, but in equal conditions, the simple option is always the true one!! I bias towards a simple love song.

Quote from: Ssarah
John formed his first band, The Quarry Men, in 1957
John was 15 when he met Paul McCartney, who was 14
That is incorrect. John and Paul met after a Quarrymen's gig on July 6th 1957. Meaning Paul was 15, John was 16. The band itself was formed in March 1957.
Quote from: Ssarah
John's mother died after being hit by a car
The car was driven by a drunken policeman off duty.
