Speaking of Dhani...

Can anybody enlighten me as to the reason his name is pronounced as Danny as opposed to Donny? I know his name is based on two notes from the Indian musical scale, but have never heard the two words pronounced separately. Typically, a single Indian word constructed like Dhani would be pronounced closer to Donny instead of Danny. Just curious.
