Reacting yesterday to comments she made at the Q magazine awards criticising the 63-year-old singer, McCartney claimed Ono, 72, had devoted her life to attacking him.
"I don't think she's the brightest of buttons," he said. "I don't want to get into a bun fight but she's said some particularly daft things in her time."
His outburst, which appeared in the Sunday Express, followed comments Ono made while receiving a special award on behalf of Lennon last Monday.
Claiming Lennon sometimes wondered why McCartney's songs were covered rather than his, she explained: "I said, 'You're a good songwriter - it's not June with Spoon that you write. Most musicians are probably nervous about covering your songs'."
Ono later claimed she had been misinterpreted.
