The kick-off of British Rock Music
« on: January 09, 2009, 07:03:39 PM »

Which of these song was the kick-off of British Rock Music?
Was it Cliff's Move It, The Shadows' Apache or The Beatles Love Me Do or did another song start the British rock scene?

I think "Move It" was important , but the one that really got the ball rolling ,
was Lonnie Donegan and his Skiffle Group  "Rock Island Line" (1956) think this is the record that kicked it off so to speak ?

It's probably absurd for someone who isn't British and wasn't around anywhere else at the time to venture an opinion, but I agree with DaveRam about "Rock Island Line." It could be a Beatle-centered view of things, though: skiffle and the Quarrymen and all that.  :)

This # 13 UK hit from Tommy Steele & The Steelmen "Rock With The Caveman" (1956) sounds like the first British RockN Roll record to me ?

Are people voting for "Love Me Do" because they see that record as the birth of The Beatles and how they changed everything ?
I thought some of the question was about what was going on before The Beatles ?

Definitely. It's the reason why these kind of polls usually end up an irrelevance. Some people will just vote for their favourite regardless of what the question was.

remember it wasn't called rock and roll when lonnie started the skiffle craze...the term came about from various songs...they talked of rocking in some songs and others talked of rolling...some examples....

henry is supposed to have been hank ballard,he did a series of songs about annie...

annie had a baby was a response to his own song

read about hank here http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/hank-ballard..
of course the moral majority says it is directley a sexual connitation but it isn't entirely....
