I don't think it's sad. The guy's done more bad than good.
For years he's been telling the (already dangerously overcrowded) world to not use condoms (while millions are dying of AIDS in Africa - many of whom are catholic and do whatever the pope tells them to do), and that homosexuals are sick people that should keep it in the closet (so they'll either have to live a lie and marry someone they're not in love with - or become outcasts in the eyes of the catholics). And above that, he's often falsely accused the Dutch government of all kinds of horrible things (he for instance once compared a Dutch doctor to Mengele because he (legally) ended the life of a terminally ill child that was in constant unbearable pain).
I won't shed a tear if he dies. I'm sure he always just said whatever he believed, but he should've thought about the consequences of his words. He got a lot of people in a lot of trouble.
