How would they sound today?
« on: June 18, 2005, 11:15:13 AM »

I've always tried to imagine what the Beatles would sound like if they existed 5, 10, 15 or maybe even 25 years longer. We all know they didn't, but till today people always try to compare other bands with The Beatles. I've heard people saying that should The Beatles still be together, they would sound like Oasis. I guess not (in fact, I haven't got a clue). What are your thoughts about this? What would our friends have sounded in the 70's, 80's and later on? Like the Rolling Stones? I don't know. I wonder if anybody has interesting philosophies about this.

If the Beatles would have still existed as a group today they would be a legendary rock band from the 60's in their 60's just like the Stones.

Less legendary than they are now, I think. You got any ideas about the music?

You have to be crazy if you think the Beatles would have been less legendary now if they were still together as a group Bobber. I think they would have made some great music through the 70's up until now just not in the same leagues as Revolver & Abbey Road.

Don't know Wayne. I agree on the idea that The Beatles were the biggest thing in the sixties (for me it's an idea, I haven't conciously been there). But it might be that the legend has grown even bigger by breaking up. Just philosophing. I think that they would absolutely be a legendary group if they should exist nowadays, but comparing with The Rolling Stones: they are legends too, but as a group now less legendary then say, fifteen or twenty years ago. I agree on your thoughts that they would have made some amazing music. Unfortunately....

I always saw Badfinger as the Beatles of the 70's... Listen to that music... It's them!

I had a dream -- er, nightmare like this once.

The Beatles never broke up. All is beautiful flowers and happy chocolate for the next few years. They put out an album in the mid-seventies... a disco album. It was horrible, yet very popular. The Beatles as a disco group... possibly the worst nightmare I've had in my life. o_x;;

I know what you're talking about now Bobber about the Beatles not being as influential now as they were in the 60's if they never did break up if they still existed.

Hmm, could be. But on the other hand: that's the way Paul developed his musical carrier to in the past decades. We will never knew what he would have sounded like if he should have influences from his fellow-beatles.

Lennon wouldn't have the vocal power of his best 60s stuff--just listen to the 70s stuff.
george would probably have evolved more into a leadership role--or at least not the little brother role, I hope.  Ringo would still be hanging on.  Hopefully Paul would have learned some respect and not be trying to run the whole show.

Maybe there'd have been some Lennon-Harrison songs.  Or some McCartney-Starr compositions.

Maybe some concept albums: Like Beatles "Skiffle Album" ?

George said in an interview a few years before his death that he thought The Beatles music, had they not have broke up, would have sound like what ELO had done or something very similiar. This comment was made after he worked with and became close friends with Jeff Lynne. I think the ochestration both groups used on their recordings do sound something alike. It is obvious though Jeff Lynne and ELO were influnced by The Beatles.

ELO started their career re-writing "I Am The Walrus"  ;)
