Looking forward to seeing this movie. The reviews I've read so far were very positive and I loved part 1.

ooh love that Johnny and the way he plays Jack. I read somewhere that he met with Keith Richards, brought some pirate costumes and they had a lot of fun. I guess so.
Can't wait to see the next part.

Has Johnny Depp ever made a bad movie? If so, I haven't seen it yet.

I thought it was very good. Johnny was superb as usual, but they went a little overboard with the special effects I think. And I could have done with less of the simpering looks between Elizabeth and Will.

I love the simpering looks between Elizabeth and Wil! That's the best part! Well, besides Depp.

It's not a remake; it's a differnt version of the book. A movie can't be a remake if it was based of an origanl source. And I thought it was good. Roald Dahl hated the original, but he would've liked this.

Anyway, that's not what we're talking about...

Roald Dahl did not hate the original. He wrote the original script for it actually. Which I think was more effective then trying to stick to the original book. He purposely shortened his own songs which allowed him to keep the message behind them while the new movie gave us a lot of flash so we wouldn't get bored and distracted us from even bothering to realize there was a message. I think a big reason that the '71 movie was so different from the book was that it's almost impossible to be faithful to it and come out with something meaningful. You get what Dahl was going for in the old movie. I don't think you do with the new one. It's more entertainment and less of an actual lesson.
While Burton's version is good, it's also kind of dull. And that whole back story about Wonka's past hardly came out of the book. The 1971 movie is much darker and even though people don't see it as being as faithful to the book as the new one it seems to capture the spirit of the book a whole lot better. Maybe because Dahl wrote the script and Wilder played the character in a charming but insane way. It's a classic. Gene Wilder was brilliant. He was actually scary and psychotic. Depp was just goofy. He didn't capture the character at all. I hope the fact that it has great CGI effects isn't a reason why someone would prefer it. There's something to be said about those old 70's movies. They went for quality of story and I think that holds up even if it looks dated. But I know that's not what we're talking about! Just had to get that in. ;D

Roald may have written the script for the first one, but I heard he hated it anyway, and refused to let them make a sequel wih Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I guess the reason I like the Depp version is because it's more about Charlie. I thought that Johnny Depp captured Willy Wonka a lot better than Gene Wilder did, but everyone has a different impression of the book and what it should be like. The thing that I didn't like about the first was that they changed some stuff that was unnecessary, like the nut roomn became the egg room, and they got rid of some of the parent characters.
I personally hate CGI and I definitely agree with you in that sense. I do like the fcat that it exists in a bizarre Tim Burton-time warp type thing, however.

Yeah, I am a rabid Roald Dahl fan... I could just go on and on about this stuff. Don't even get me started on the movie adaption of The Witches

I saw Pirates 2 yesterday. I thought it was a really beautiful movie, the images and special effects were really amazing. I'm not too sure about the story though, maybe it was a bit too much. But it was pretty entertaining. Recommended.
