Fuzz Bass: Beatles vs. Stones
« on: September 30, 2006, 03:50:57 AM »

I was listening to "Think for Yourself" and "Under My Thumb" recently--and struck by how much better the fuzz bass works in UMT.  It's just a little too intrusive in TFY--it kinda dominates the song.

Any other ideas on fuzz bass? Other records?  Did Paul ever use it again?  Zappa?

Prehaps one of the best examples of this is the song by the "Electric Prunes" and a Kenny Rogers song called I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In?

There's a pretty heavy fuzz bass in the last part of Cabinessence by the Beach Boys. There's also one in the original version of Good Vibrations (the one recorded during the Pet Sounds session, not the single version).

Muse and indeed Nirvana and the Peppers use(d) it a lot, especially live. Fuzz bass is cool if you have just one guitarist, cause when the guitarist does a solo or something, the bass can take over the role of the rhythm guitar.

I love the dance sequence in "The Big Lebowski"

I think that's fuzz bass on Mean Mr Mustard.  It's a little toned down, which I like.  It's too hot in "Think for Yourself" for my taste and dominates the song (I like the fuzz bass credit on the album cover, just in case we missed it).

I think I detected fuzz bass on Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues."

You know, there might be a book in this.  The Great Fuzz Bass Songs in Rock'n'Roll History.

Or at least a VH1 100 Greatest Fuzz Bass Songs in Rock-n-Roll.

Keep 'em coming.
