McCartney Plans London Eye Make-Over
« on: August 23, 2007, 01:57:37 PM »

Tourism bosses in Britain are in talks with SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY over the former BEATLE's plans to rename the London Eye landmark as part of a publicity campaign surrounding his upcoming DVD anthology. Marketing bosses behind the DVD launch have reportedly approached the London Eye bosses with a view to rechristening the big wheel attraction on the banks of the River Thames the MCCartney Eye. They also hope to beam the artwork for the cover of the DVD, which features the rocker's eye, onto the landmark in November (07) for the duration of the launch events. A source tells Britain's The Mirror newspaper, "It's ambitious but his people are determined to make it happen and Sir Paul may even perform a one-off show in one of the pods to make it even more special."

You know, I'm getting sick of defending Paul McCartney to my Beatles hating friends. I hereby throw in the towel.

Where ya been, Kate?

I just hope it's the thinking of some over zealous clone in marketting, and not The Man himself.

He does like to get very involved in all aspects of his career. He's going to get such a slagging for this if it happens. You could say David Blaine's career was one massive publicity stunt, but wasn't it McCartney that stood underneath him in London, shouting up obscenities? Why doesn't he lock himself into one of the carraiges for three weeks!!

Why is everyone so unhappy about this? I'm not disagreeing with anything, I just don't get it.

Thanks!

Because he's not Toyota or Microsoft. He's supposed to be an artist. This just reinforces the long held prejudice that Macca is nothing more than a crass commercialist churning out a product in order to make bucks. It also stinks of meglomania.
If he really wants people to buy his music then he should sit his arse down at the piano and start writing decent tunes again. Rightly or wrongly this blatant corporate self promotion is not cool, and in the world of rock coolness counts bigtime.
I'm p*ssed off with this, because after a long time in the dark he was finally getting some credibality and respect. Then he does the Starbucks thing and this. It puts him right back.

I do agree, he should sit right down and write himself (us!) a few good tunes.

On the other hand, this pitiless degree of promotion is all he has known for 45 years ... to him it's as natural as sliced bread. Might be hard for him to envision anything else.

As far as me, dear Paul, I don't care how you promote yourself as long as you keep me in beautiful new songs!

I don't see the big deal. He's trying to get his music out there. Radio isn't what it used to be. They just don't support new stuff. Do you remember hearing one Rolling Stone song from their new album on the radio? And it actually wasn't a bad album. Anyway, I think this is better than going on crap shows like American Idol in order to be heard which a lot of bands are now resorting to. These bands have to take different avenues anymore if they want a platform for their new music. The music business isn't what it used to be.

You have an excellent point about the music business. Increasingly consumers are presented with a homogenized view of the "product", be it music, the news, whatever. As music is (or should be) an artform, it really doesn't flourish under mass-packaging.

Surely it's been like that for years.
