Who influences you musically?
« on: April 25, 2006, 03:03:46 PM »

This is just a thread for who influences you musically and in what area. For me, it's this:

Melody/Instrumental wise: The Beatles
Vocals: Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, Ronnie Spector
Lyrics: Bob Dylan, Nellie McKay, Cole Porter

It's all a big melting pot for me...Beatles being the most enduring from all aspects.

Thanx. ;D

Influenced by all kind of sixties bands (Beatles, you know), The Police, The Jam, U2, Radiohead, The Presidents Of The United States Of America, The Chancers, that kind of stuff.

Everything I've ever heard.

But myself really, whatever noise comes out of me is the noise that I make.

My favorite songwriter is Brian Wilson, but he mostly just demotivates me. Every time I listen to Pet Sounds or Smile, I get the feeling it's useless to make music myself because nothing I could ever write could possibly come even close to his music.

Currently my influences are mostly The Beatles, Elliott Smith and Cat Stevens for the acoustic songs I write at home, and No Use For A Name and Good Riddance for the music I write for my band.

Oh, and it's not like I'm trying to say that the music I write does come close to what the Beatles, Elliott Smith or Cat Stevens did, but at least their music's fairly two dimensional. Writing something Beatle-ish isn't impossible. But Pet Sounds is just so incredibly deep and overwhelming that I just don't believe I (or pretty much anyone else for that matter) could be mentally capable of coming up with something similar.

Cat Stevens has an incredible voice.

His voice is OK, but I mostly admire him for his songwriting skills. He's great with melodies.
