I hadn't realized he recorded his version during his "Lost Weekend." He certainly doesn't sound to me like someone who's basically in the middle of a months-long bender. (Or maybe he does—I really wouldn't know.  ;)  )

I think the idea this whole period was a year long bender where he was off his head was talked up after he returned to yoko. He had his moments early on but he seems pretty productive in that time. Rock and roll, Walls and Bridges. Working with Elton John, Bowie and Jagger. Producing Harry Nilsson.

I'm sure you're correct. I realized, after giving it some thought, that all I've really read about this time in John's life are anecdotes that support the whole year-long-bender viewpoint (e.g., heckling the Smothers Brothers). I'd love to read a more nuanced account of that time.

It's so nice to see one of my very favorite early songs get some attention.  :)

It's a really catchy little tune.  It sounded great when Paul did it in concert.

I can only imagine! I'm quite jealous.

Hello Goodbye:  That pic you posted of the 5 early Beatles is very interesting to me in the following aspects:

1)  Note that John, George, Paul and Stu are wearing light suits and black shirts.  Pete is wearing a dark suit and a light tie.
2)  Note that John's, George's, and Paul's guitar necks are all pointed at Pete.
3)  Note that Stu's bass guitar neck points out of the scene (away from the others).

Maybe I'm reading meanings into this but here I go:

1)  Pete is not appearing as one of them by virtue of his appearance.
2)  The guitars of 3 Beatles all pointing at Pete seem to signify him as a target for eventual dismissal from the band.
3)  Stu's guitar signals out (not in) in the Beatles scene.  His exit from the group was to be his future.

So, thanks for posting the pic!
Some try to tell me thoughts they cannot defend.

You're very observant and perceptive, Loco.  That picture must have been one of their earliest "clues."   :)

My all time favourite early song is This Boy

Oh, and I love Besame Mucho too  ;yes

I love This Boy too, Lana. John's vocals and amazing rhythm guitar, the harmonies and that middle eight get me every time. I never miss an opportunity to watch the video you posted, and that usually leads to this...

Is it weird that I cried the first time I saw it?   ;D
