British TV in the 60's
« on: September 25, 2009, 06:15:43 PM »

Been looking at some old shows i rememberd from the 60's  ;D
So if you older ones from the UK can remember any shows you watched as kids post a few clips , it will kind of give a flavour of 60's British culture , some of this TV The Beatles will have been watching  :)

I found these pre Monty Python sketches on the Cilla Black show from 1969 , i actually remembered both , there very funny .
These two clips show a young Graham Chapman ( Monty Python Life Of Brian)

The Thunderbirds ran in the US too.  It aired weekdays in the late afternoon and kept youngsters from getting to their homework early.  I was a bit too old to watch it but I remember the great marionette puppetry.  Thanks for bringing back old memories, DaveRam.   :)

I wish they would put The Saint and Secret Agent (Danger Man, to you) back on the air here.

I've always thought that British TV, cinema and music became very retrospective in the sixties. Perhaps because there was a sense of new prosperity there was a harking back to the last great times - there is constant referencing to Victorian and Edwardian times. (Pepper cover for instance).
American TV seemed to be obsessed with the reinforcing nuclear family values from outside threats, from Lost In Space, Bewitched....

I think that's just the way the Brits are. We're still doing it now. We have history and heritage that we're proud of, and that means big viewing figures for things like historical drama. Let's not forget though, that we also made some fine 'gritty' kitchen sink drama in the 60's: Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, Cathy Come Home, and A Taste Of Honey amongst many. Even early Coronation Street.

I can't see how we were musically retro.

Ok - maybe more of a yearning for childhood and a "lost" England. I didn't mean it sounded retro, just the themes and fashions of rock seemed retrospective.
Shows like The Avengers and The Prisoner, despite being very modern, also had that quirky Edwardian thing going on. And movies like Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?I do think there was a general feeling of nostalgia (perhaps a better word than retrospection).

I loved The Avengers and the theme music still sends a shiver down my spine. Superb stuff  - sexy and whimsical, all a bit tongue and cheek (not unBeatle like)

I mostly saw Diana Rigg in her older version, but even then she's quite pretty 8) Never seen the avengers though... But definitely watched the Prisoner. In fact, we watched Hammer Into Anvil last night... again ;D
