This topic is to talk about those songs that almost reached the top of the pops.

Here are some examples from the 60's, songs that climbed to #2 in the Billboard Hot 100 from US:

"She's Not There" (The Zombies, 1964)

"Daydream" (The Lovin' Spoonful, 1966)

The FBI's favorite song....

"Louie, Louie" (The Kingsmen, 1964)

“Louie Louie” peaked at #2 in January 1964, behind Bobby Vinton’s “There! I’ve Said It Again” – the very last #1 single before Beatlemania overtook the U.S. the next month.

Yeah, "Louie, Louie" is better remembered than lots of #1 hits. Thanks for your post, Kelley.

Always thought it was wild that CCR never had a #1 hit, but had a ton of #2's.

Yeah, I counted five #2 hits by CCR!

Ironically, Linda couldn't get to #1 because of The Captain & Tennille's Love Will Keep Us Together.

The Supremes' The Happening kept Sweet Soul Music from being #1.

It's really funny Andrés but I've been thinking about this very topic today. Last night I was at one of those quiz websites and this was the topic of one of them. I was surprised at how many popular songs stalled out at #2.

Hmm, yes that is ironic! I guess there were a lot of other kids obsessed with that song in the summer of 1975. Every summer there was that one song that would make us turn the radio up and sing at the top of our lungs. LOL

With those two songs alone, there was a song for everyone.

I liked Linda's song too that summer. And now.

Another #2:

That alone should have bumped it up to #1.  ;D

Maybe if he smashed Dick's bass fiddle it would have gone to #1.   ;D

I guess "My Generation" was too revolutionary for its time. It reached #2 in UK and just #74 in US! It's a shame that one of greatest bands of all time never had a #1 single in UK or US (where they only had one Top 10 with "I Can See For Miles").

Another #2 hit by the Who in UK was "I'm A Boy" (1966):

Oh, wow. I didn't realize it didn't do any better than that here.

Maybe if he smashed Dick's bass fiddle and John Entwistle's bass guitar it would have done better.

Wait!  I just noticed that Roger Daltrey didn't twirl his microphone.  Now that would have helped too.
