Songs That Make You Emotional
« on: January 11, 2010, 03:52:14 AM »

Now this can be emotional as in sad, angry, or even happy, but I mean in a very powerful way. No Beatles songs, but solo Beatle songs are OK. I just really like seeing what songs deeply affect people, because (at least in my case) they aren't always my favorite songs or by my favorite artists.

Songs that make me really, really happy (for whatever reason):
Strawberry Swing- Coldplay
Daylight, Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare-Matt & Kim
Girls & Boys In Love- The Rumble Strips
Rock 'N' Roll- Eric Hutchinson
Take Me Out- Franz Ferdinand
That Green Gentleman- Panic! At The Disco
You And I Both-Jason Mraz
Let Em In, Jet, Band On The Run, Bluebird- Paul McCartney & Wings

Songs that make me very emotional/cry (but not from sadness)
Beautiful Boy-John Lennon (I cry almost every time I hear this song, it's just so lovely)
Beautiful Night-Paul McCarntey (The upbeat ending)
When The Day Met The Night-Panic! At The Disco
Lost!-Coldplay
Sunshine-The All-American Rejects
Wake Up-The Arcade Fire

There are others as well, I just don't want to look through my whole music library  :)

There aren't many songs that have ever made me cry, but I can never listen to these three with dry eyes:

Wim Sonneveld - Het Dorp (a sentimental song about an older man who sees the village he was born and raised in change around him)
Het Dorp - Wim Sonneveld

Beckley-Lamm-Wilson - I Wish For You (recorded shortly before he died, it's more or less Carl Wilson's musical "farewell letter" to his sons)
Carl Wilson

Venice - Family Tree (this was played at my grandmother's funeral)
Family Tree -- Venice

Solo Beatles songs that make me feel like crying:

John:
Love
Grow Old With Me

Paul:
I'm Carrying
Little Lamb Dragonfly
Here Today (especially live)

"Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel always makes me feel good, but who wants to admit that?  :-[ :P Anything dance-y makes me feel happy, I guess.

Does the Across the Universe version of Let It Be with Carol Woods and Timothy T. Mitchum count as a Beatles song? Because the original version doesn't get to me, but that version chokes me up every time.

George's All Those Years Ago and Ringo's Never Without You get me as well.

Some other ones that never fail to choke me up...

If Nobody Believed In You by Joe Nichols
Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton, although I guess that's a bit of a given.
My Father's Eyes by Eric Clapton
No One But You (Only The Good Die Young) by Queen (I cry like a baby)

On a Queen note, the song Barcelona always gets me way emotional, not because it's sad but because it so utterly incredible. I absolutely adore it. Same goes for Clapton's Holy Mother.

A few songs that make me really happy:

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey. That song, cranked up wayyy loud, is amazing.
Blow Away by George.
Nobody Told Me, by John.
The Dynamo of Volition by Jason Mraz
Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons

'Somedays' by Paul is the only song that brought a tear to my eye (well not including most of McCartney 2 but that was for different reasons  ha2ha).

There's a new Dutch singer who's music really makes happy lately... Her name is Caro Emerald and these two songs are the only ones she's released so far... Can't wait for her to bring out an album.

Alphaville - Forever Young

Some people think this song is really cheesy, but it reminds me of a time last year when I spent a lot of time alone, contemplating my life and feeling depressed about a guy with whom I was in love.

The Roger Whittaker Christmas Album - Darcy The Dragon

This song was always played in my house around Christmastime. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to being a happy 6 year old, decorating the Christmas tree. This was one of my Nana's favourite Christmas albums, so it makes me think of her.

The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee 1966

I really don’t know why this one makes me emotional: because it reminds me of a long-lost 60’s feeling of my youth, when everything was possible? Or perhaps since it sounds a little Beatlesque, in a way. I honestly don’t know.

Sad songs? 'Imagine' made me cry once. Haha I'm such a dork. xD
'Tears In Heaven' by Eric Clapton makes me feel like crying.
And at the risk of sounding like I only really listen to two bands, 'It's Late' by Queen is quite emotional too.
Maybe I'd even throw in 'Behind Blue Eyes' by The Who.

Happy songs would be... 'Never Be Lonely' by The Feeling. That makes me happy, which is strange because that's the complete opposite of what it's meant to be. 'Mr Blue Sky' by ELO too.

There are plenty of others, of course, but I don't want you to have to scroll through a novel about songs, emotions and me. ;D

That's indeed one of the most moving cheesy songs ever made... Several years ago I heard this song on the radio when I was at work and this was a few days after a friend of mine had died at age 23. Hearing that song with those words about being "forever young" was really too much at that moment. I had to leave the office for a few minutes cause I just couldn't listen to it.

At the risk of confirming my superficiality, I can't help but bop with a smile when I hear "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves  :D

I actually saw them do this live on a small high school gym stage way back when. Pretty good stuff!!

There`s one very emotional great song for me. And this is NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN by The Moody Blues. Oh, I am already carried away...
Even can`t think of anything else, maybe later...

In My Life makes me really sad, because I played it at my Grandfather's burial last year. I can hardly listen to the songs somedays.

Songs that always seem to make me happy:
Penny Lane- Beatles
Here Comes The Sun- Beatles
Get Off Of My Cloud- Rolling Stones
Rock and Roll- Led Zeppelin
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life- Monty Python [I don't know if that counts? Haha]
Songs that make me feel sad:
Tell Laura I Love Her
She's Leaving Home
For No One
And then there are songs that just evoke a real strange feeling I can't explain. A lot of Pink Floyd songs do that. Another is 'Because'
