I was just reading about this song not too long ago! Actually I was trying to find out who Lydia Pinkham was. I always see ads for Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when I'm reading old newspapers and I wondered if she was real. She was and she was "honored" in an American drinking song ("The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham") because her "women's tonic" became a favorite of men too, especially during Prohibition in the US. It was 40 proof! I don't know if it really relieved women of their ailments but I'm sure it made them forget for a while! The title was changed and the lyrics cleaned up but the basic premise was unchanged.
