All this time without a topic of their own.

I thought I was the only one here who liked them! They are one of those groups that I remember hearing on the radio as a very little kid. But until just recently I thought "She's a Must to Avoid" was "She's a Mess to Avoid".  ;D

"No Milk Today" is a fabulous Sixties pop song. Underrated group but I remember a documentary about fellow Mancunians The Hollies in which Graham Nash grew quite impatient in a mild row with Peter Noone being happy to settle for catchy, lightweight pop which didn't try to "open doors". It was another classic "We're artists with the opportunity to change things" versus "No, we're entertainers lucky enough to just have fun" type disagreement, although they seemed to remain friends.

I can understand both their viewpoints.  During the 60s there were times I wanted to take a break from the Revolution, heady music and songs with meanings and go to a party and dance with a girl.   ;)

The Keith Moon bio 'Dear Boy' has wonderful anecdotes about HH touring the US with the Who in 1967. Except for Peter Noone, the other Hermits partied hard with Moonie especially on his 21st birthday.

Unfortunately the night was marred when Keith fell over and smashed a tooth. They took him to an after hours dentist and fixed it. But the dentist couldn't use anaesthetic as Keith was blithering drunk. He was screaming when they drilled out his busted tooth and put a cap in. Lol

Keith Moon teased Peter Noone relentlessly.  Peter was always very patient and tolerant.

Looks like a lot of those kids weren't sure what to make of this Herman guy! LOL I didn't discover The Midnight Special until 1975 but if I had seen this I would have known who he was. But he did look a lot different than the first time I saw him:

Those kids were about five or six years old when Herman's Hermits released I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am.  They were watching Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room in 1965.  In 1973 these kids liked stuff like Grand Funk Railroad and Tony Orlando and Dawn.  I bet they knew the words to Little Willy alright!

Yeah, but Peter Noone called them out alright, calling their sing-a-long "sensational, nearly" and "nothing short of mediocre" and teaching them how to spell Henry.  I loved it!   icon_good

Sadly, the songs they performed and their delivery made them come off as a novelty act.  They should have performed I'm Into Something Good, No Milk Today and this one...

Nah!  Forget it!  Teens in 1973 wouldn't understand or appreciate those songs.  They related to songs on a simpler level like...

I was watching Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo as a preschooler but I also knew all the songs on the radio and was an ardent fan of the Smothers Brothers and Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Those kids had  no excuse!  ;D But you’re right; the performance was a bit over the top.

Oh, did I ever tell you my Romper Room story?

Okay. We didn’t have preschool where I lived so I loved watching Miss Patty. One day she made the trip from Johnstown so we could all stand in line at our local department store and wait our turn to talk to her. Only when I got to the head of the line there was no talking on my part. I took one look at her and started wailing. Mom hustled me out of there and she wasn’t too pleased but she laughed about it later. I guess I was just star-struck!

There was no such thing as preschool in the early 50s.  There was something called Ding Dong School...

Miss Frances asked questions and replied to what kids would be answering.  What a bore!  Fortunately I was living in North Carolina at the time where we had no TV reception.  I found other ways of learning about things like going to the Navy airfield to watch Grumman Panthers take off and land...
