I like this, I think I'll give it a go...

Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand (think of - I'm American); All You Need Is Love (choice - b/c it embodies their stated ideal)

Rolling Stones - (Can't Get No) Satisfaction (think of - need I elaborate?); Gimme Shelter (choice - b/c it perfectly captures who they were during the late '60s)

Bob Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind (think of - b/c it was of the time and is a perfect folk song); Rosemary, Lily, and the Jack of Hearts (choice - b/c it represents a great Dylan story song)

The Who - My Generation (think of); Baba O'Riley (choice - b/c it's epic!)

The Animals - House of the Rising Sun (think of and choice - it perfectly showcases their bluesy roots and Eric's awesome voice)

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (think of and choice - it's the definitive Led Zep song, imo)

Cream - Sunshine of Your Love (think of and choice - see the Led Zep explanation)

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man (think of); Turn, Turn, Turn (to Everything There is a Season) (choice b/c it illustrates their sound and was of its time)

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Teach Your Children (think of); Ohio (choice)

The Kinks - You Really Got Me (think of); All Day and All of the Night (choice)

The Beach Boys - Surfin' USA (think of); Good Vibrations (choice)

Elvis - That's All Right (think of); American Trilogy (Live - Aloha from Hawaii) (choice)

The Doors - Light My Fire (think of); Take it as it Comes (choice)

Steve Miller - The Joker (think of); Serenade (choice)

Supertramp - The Logical Song (think of); Give a Little Bit (choice)

The Zombies - Time of the Season (think of); She's Not There (choice)

I'd like to add a few more:

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze (think of); All Along the Watchtower (choice)

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising (think of); Lookin' Out My Back Door (choice)

The Yardbirds - For Your Love (think of); Shapes of Things (choice)

This one I thought was hard.  I just always think of Woodstock first when I hear them, but your choices are probably right.

I had to make sure I didn't read other replies so not to be influenced. I'm interpreting this as what song would a generic program play as generally representative of the artist so that it's easily recognisable as them without explanation.

Beatles  - She Loves You
Rolling Stones - Jumping Jack Flash
Dylan - Blowing in the Wind
The Who - My Generation
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to you know where
Cream - Sunshine of Your Live
The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn
CSNY - Woodstock
The Kinks - Lola
The Beach Boys - Surfin USA
Elvis - Heartbreak Hotel
The Doors - Light My Fire
Steve Miller - The Joker
Supertramp - Logical Song
The Zombies - She's not there

Good lord Cor, I don't even know this song.  I checked it out and its 14 minutes long.   ha2ha

Interesting answers so far.  I'll post more bands in a few days.  Just a little experiment.

I guess I listed Abracadabra because just a few days ago I downloaded his entire 1983 Loreley Amphitheatre concert which he began with Abracadabra.  At the end of the song he was magically transformed into a tiger...

Beatles - She Loves You
Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
Bob Dylan - The Times They Are a-Changin'
The Who - My Generation
The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Cream - Strange Brew
The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - None in particular (and am never sure which ones do or don't include Neil Young)
The Kinks - You Really Got Me
The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Elvis - Suspicious Minds
The Doors - Light My Fire
Steve Miller - Who?? I've heard of Abracadabra and The Joker other than that, no idea
Supertramp - Breakfast In America
The Zombies - She's Not There

I'm sure that in many cases the "signature song" isn't by any means our favourite of course and I'm not surprised to see a pattern of concensus emerging between us...still a great thread though.

What made me raise my eyebrow more was the choice of artists. Clearly listed by an American!

I'm not sure why your occipitofrontalis muscle was so active, MM.  9 of the 16 on the list are British groups.

It's not so much the actual quotient of Brits on the list HG and nimrod; rather the inclusion of acts like Supertramp, CSN&Y and Steve Miller (which I thought jarred in the company of the more mainstream giants - be they British OR American - like Stones, Elvis, The Who, Led Zep, Dylan et al). I always regard such outfits as having disproportionately huge soft rock-ish appeal to you guys across the pond and would personally lump them alongside artists such as REO Speedwagon, Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, Air Supply, Boston etc none of whom would - I imagine - figure particularly prominently on a list generated by a middle aged Brit (but I don't speak for all of us and could well be wrong!).

By the way I'd like to stress that this is in no way whatsoever a criticism of Todd's list. I just think you'd be a bit bemused if a Brit had done the list and thrown in people like ELO, T.Rex, The Jam or Abba for example. And I can never quite get my head around this idea that The Zombies get such a shout on these things either to be honest. Surely they're minnows in comparison to the likes of DC5, Manfred Mann or The Hollies, to name but three examples?

Steve Miller - Who?? I've heard of Abracadabra and The Joker other than that, no idea

And that's too bad.  Steve Miller has been around since the mid-60s.  Blues, blues rock, psychedelic rock, pop-rock...he did it all and did it well.  And still does!

Monterey Pop   1967

The Steve Miller Band was in no way an outfit with disproportionately huge soft rock-ish appeal to us guys across the pond.

Here's some magic for ya!
