The Abbey Road cover
« on: November 24, 2018, 09:31:00 PM »

I used to like this cover but now I don't.

It seems like the Beatles really played into the Paul is Dead fan-created mythology and I think that was both classless and corny on their part.

The symbolism of their apparel is so obvious.  You couldn't mistake it for anything else but Paul's funeral procession.  Nothing even slightly subtle here.

I think they ran out of ideas just like they did when they let the White Album jacket be totally blank.

Don't get mad at me, folks.  I respect that you probably love the Abbey Road cover and consider it a work of genius.  (If I don't think about it too much I still like it.)

I think its a great cover, very iconic.
Im not sure the boys did that 'dead Paul' thing on purpose
I mean if they'd wanted to play into the mythology they couldve done so much more.

I like the cover too. I think the Paul is Dead stuff is overplayed. The main “clue” seems to be Paul being shoeless and out of step. But there’s other shots they could have used with him wearing sandals. It seems they picked the final one just on the overall look.

One other "clue" is the license plate on a car in the background, which reads (at least in part) "27 IF," which supposedly means Paul would have turned 27 that year if he had lived.

I like the cover, too.

That’s right. I’d forgotten about that one. Wasn’t the age wrong or something though?

The album was released before the Paul is Dead stuff started so it has zero to do with it

Yeah there is an Abbey Road app that has a permanent webcam going. I look at it every now and then.  Everyday of the year people are there visiting it

Yes indeed. LocoMo should really have checked his dates before starting such unfounded criticism of an iconic album cover.

There was an earlier rumor in London in 1967.  The Beatles would certainly have been aware of it.

So what was the meaning of the cover if I am wrong about it?

I think there were ideas floating around for the cover, like Mount Everest and a giant cruise ship etc but they couldnt agree.
It was proposed to just walk across the street on that sunny day and get a photographer, it was easy, cheap and brilliant.

When you think about it they never spent much on covers (barring Pepper)

Ive always loved the cover, in fact I think its my favourite., just shading Rubber Soul & Beatles For sale.

Paul was born on 18 June 1942

The Abbey Road photoshoot was on 8 August 1969

thanks, I agreed with the trip to London to see out daughter that was in her year abroad hoping to get a shot of the kids on the crosswalk, I was so nervous and the traffic was real and impatient.  Why would anyone drive that way knowing there are tourists always doing the walk?

I was playing my White Album backward in December 1968 looking for clues.
