With A Little Help From My Friends question
« on: March 25, 2005, 08:41:20 PM »

Was it a phrase before the song came out? Like, did people actually say that? The reason I want to know is because I hear that saying alllllllll the time and I'm wondering if it originated from the song or nor.

I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we pass the audition.

The Beatles are responsible for several words/phrases that have gone into the language.

"with a little help from my friends" zapped into the language with unbelievable speed. I reckon it was established by the end of 1967. And I don't think Joe Cocker had ANYTHING to do with it!

Another phrase is "all you need is love".

Slightly different is Lucy, the name given to the female Australopithecus skull found in Africa, in 1974. Lucy is a famous ape/hominid, being the earliest member of the hominids known at that time (older hominid fossils have been found lately). "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was playing on a portable radio/cassette player at the time!

"A Hard Day's Night" is a Ringo-ism.

Although the "Beatles" were obviously know for the "Little Help From My Friends" I think "Joe Cocker" was more know for the song because he sung it live numerous times and it was his best known cover! John Belushi even mocked him doing it in front of millions on Sat Night Live! Also was cover for a Canadian charity by guys from Helix, and Lee Aron amoung others!

Bon Jovi did a cover of it too. Joe Cocker does a good job of it,but I still like The Beatles version of it better. I love the way the other Beatles sing the questions to Ringo.

I like the Joe Cocker version, but I swear I always thought he said something like, "I could give up for my friends"... I guess it was just the way he speeds into it... After I heard the Beatles version (which is after I heard the Cocker version!), it just stopped sounding right to me (the Cocker version, that is)...

And I'm sure the Beatles contributed a lot to the times' vocabulary. It'd be interesting to know what they could've contributed.

i think its the best Beatles cover I've heard (not that the competition is that hot). He makes the song his own, not just copying it. Most non-Beatle people I know prefer it to the original - they reckon its more ballsy.

i agree, a lot of people i come across like cocker's version better. i really don't enjoy it that much though, it sounds so overdramatic to me. i'll take ringo singing, thanks

To get back to the original question, I don't think 'With a little help from my friends' is a particular Beatles phrase.
It existed before the song came out but now of course nobody else could possibly do a song with the same title.
It's been 'Beatle-ised'!
