Paul McCartney Tries To Save Beatles College
November 26, 2005, 8:00:45
PAUL McCARTNEY ATTEMPS TO SAVE SACRED BEATLES BUILDING

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY is bidding to save the Liverpool Art College building where his former BEATLES bandmate JOHN LENNON studied from being torn down.

Multi-millionaire McCartney, who owns the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) situated next door, will try to stop the landmark college from being demolished or made into appartments.

The Institute's co-founder MARK FEATHERSTONE-WITTY, says, "It would be poetic if LIPA, which is on the site of Paul's old school, and the building that was John's old art college were joined together.
"We are looking to expand, so it has come at a good time for us. I would like to see the buildings preserved for artistic purposes."

A spokesman for local tour company Cavern City Tour's Magical Mystery Bus Trip says, "That building is synonymous with The Beatles. It's where John and (his first wife) CYNTHIA met and there's a fantastic photo of the two sitting on the steps outside.

"Paul and GEORGE (HARRISON) were at the grammar school next door. They used to jump over the adjoining wall into the art college to visit their mates."

LIPA is also known as Paul McCartney's Fame School. It was also the Paul McCartney

It's really great that Paul has shown some concern regarding this. The Liverpool 'The Lads' would have known in their youth is slowly disappearing and the Art College was integral to their development as friends/musicians/people. I say old Liverpool is slowly disappearing, but the pace is quickening daily now with all the building work as a result of Capital of Culture.

In fact, the Art College symbolises all the art students who were so instrumental in the resurrection of creativity in post war Britain. It's a crying shame that the Art Colleges are now no longer part of the educational establishment full stop actually.

So Beatles fans, if you've not been to Liddypool yet and want to get a feel for the place, get your skates on!
