Brown Sugar
« on: August 07, 2008, 05:05:20 PM »

I have noticed that lyrics sites often bungle up the lyrics t certain songs. Rolling Stones songs in particular seem to fall prey to this. Te worst one is Brown Sugar. You look up the lyrics, and they are clearly not what is being expressed on the recording. For that reason, I have decided to transcribe the lyrics to Brown Sugar exactly as they are heard on the original recording

Go, cole slay
Bow found da cow down fee
So? Down a macka down in new, oh, lean!
Ska doled slave a knows he's do al right
Hairy wiggin' women
Just around midnight

Brown suga!
How come you dance so good?
Brown suga!
Just like a young girl should, a-ha

Down's beatin' cold
Amy's blood runs hot
Ladies with the hair
Honey, when's gonna stop?
Hat funny nose but it's doin' all right
You shoulda-a heard 'em justa 'round midnight

Brown suga!
How come you dance so good, na?
Brown suga!
Just like a young girl should, na!

AAaaaaaaAAaAh!
Brown suga!
How come you dance so good na?
AAAAAAAaaaaaAaaaAaAh! (budafeena)
Just like a black girl shoud, yah!

Now a pitta momma was a treasure queer
Anole's boyfriends were swee sixteen
Ah! No school, bud a na doin' a light
You shoulda a heard 'em justa 'round midnight!

Brown suga!
How come you dance so good, well?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! mama!
Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, yeaaah

I said yeah, yeah, yeah
WOOOO!
I did a, a I did a back gir good!
I said yeah, yeah, yeah
WOOOOO!
Just like a, just like a black girl should
yeah, yeah, yeah,
WOOOO!

Hi Mairi - I had not noticed that you were such a fan of misheard lyrics before, but from your Jimi Hendrix reference in your avatar, and this post as well, I can see I just wasn't paying enough attention!

BTW - the first line to Brown Sugar (I know, because I used to sing this in a band) is actually "Goh-Coh Slay", which is a soft drink in Lithuania (the last sound has an umlaut or something on there, I don't have the symbol on my computer keyboard), it is actually one of the first examples of product placement in popular entertainment, this way back c. '68 or '69. The Stones were very understimated both musically and in terms of business savvy, and this is just one example of the latter.

Sorry, I should have mentioned above that the literal translation to "Goh-Coh Slay" in Lithuanian is actually "Brown Sugar", of course   ;)

How did I miss that? Those Stones were pretty savvy for their time. Good to know.
