You know that guy who was always crying? He appeared in this clip. They called him Weepin’ Willie but his real name was Harry “King” Cole. He was the master of ceremonies for Boots Randolph at the county fair in Clearfield, PA the summer I turned 10. I got an autograph from old Harry King Cole who probably was a merry old soul when he wasn’t in character.
City folk don't know what they're missing, that's for sure. County fairs are great fun. I go to the Orange County Fair just about every year. It's about a twenty minute drive from the country house on the lake. I found out about it when I worked training standardbreds. John Patterson Sr. would always have an entry in The Grand Circuit Races at Historic Track in Goshen...
The Grand Circuit Races were held during fair week. I still have my Minerva Horsemen's stopwatch I used the three years I worked at the track...
Cherish that autograph, Kelley. Characters like Harry “King” Cole are disappearing quickly.
