Hi folks,
Some of you may possible recall me from running the old 'Beatles Rumour Mill' forum (which started about 10 years ago now!).
You may be familiar with the works of Daniel Johnston. He is a musician and artist hailing from Texas way. In the early 80's, driven by an obsession with the Beatles, he started recording what many regard as landmark lo-fi albums on a small cassette recorder. Eventually after handing copies of these tapes to friends and people he met in the street, he gained a reputation for being a gifted songwriter. Unfortunately, the same depression and mental illness that gave him the confidence to declare his work fully fledged records also hampered him from achieving commercial success. By the early 1990's Johnston had spent many years in and out of mental hospitals and his career was effectively over before it started.
However, in the last few years Dan has made great strides forwards. Last year he came and played a gig at the Union Chapel in the Angel Islington, London and blow me down if I was not there to catch with a film crew and a great wodge of audio equipment. Next month my tiny little label is making the DVD of that film its first release. The foreword is written by the one and only Doug Sulpy, top Beatles author. I've put out a couple of trailers and I would really like to see what the Beatle fans over here thought of them.
This is the first proper trailer, featuring the song "Grievances":
