I heard that song all the time the summer that I worked at Friendly’s and I agree.
I used to work at Friendly's, too! So did my ex-husband, in Jersey.
I wound up liking it yet wondering about it at the same time. I wasn’t surprised to learn later that it was from a Broadway musical called Chess but I never knew anything further about the show.
I just found out it was from a Broadway musical a few days ago, after I heard it at work on looked it up on Napster. When I learned more details, the lyrics suddenly made a lot more sense.
It was an allegorical reflection of the Cold War tensions present in the 80’s and a collaboration from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and lyricist Tim Rice. Oddly enough, the main character, based loosely on Bobby Fischer was named Freddie Trumper.
