Beatles 'Firsts'
« on: February 15, 2007, 06:12:18 PM »

Sorry if something like this has been done before- but I thought it would be interesting to hear of some Beatles 'firsts' no matter what they are. They were so influential and had so many 'firsts' from music, to lifestyles, to beliefs :-)

I guess I will start then...

- the first band to use a sitar on their records (more groups used sitars later following their example- e.g. the rolling stones)

so what else is there? ...

Pop records had strings added even in the very early days - the Beatles were well beaten in that area I think! :)

They invented stadium rock shows.
They invented whole albums of group singer-songwriting.
They were the first to put lyrics on the album cover.
They were the first group to stop touring and to refuse millions to redo a concert.

Wasn't that "just" a forty piece. Isn't "full" about 100 (sorry - I'm probably just being pendantic).

Full orchestra's are a 100 plus. Neither Pepper or AYNIL got close. (40 for Pepper, much less for AYNIL)

It's a good point. Not a full orchestra, but an orchestra.

Buddy Holly used an orchestra on It Doesn't Matter Anymore ande True Love Ways. Also, Gerry And The Pacemakers used strings on Ferry Across The Mersey and You'll Never Walk Alone - both before the Beatles first use of strings or an orchestra.

And then there's Cliff Richard - Norrie Paramor orchestrated a load of his tracks.

Elvis released the first of many gospel albums in 1960. I'm sure there were plenty of other acts pre-Beatles as well.

That's a fair point too. I had thought about Gospel music, but I didn't know that Elvis was interested in that.

Not sure about this, but I think they were the first pop band to have a gatefold sleeve. Beatles For Sale. And possibly the first (and last?) to have a double EP.
