But boy, was the revelation of George's quitting in GB a shock to me! I'd never known that before. Did any of you know?

Anyway, I'm glad they did this, and I'll probably grab the DVD if and when it comes out.

I didn't know George had quit.
I knew Ringo had quit during the white album sessions.

I kind of knew exactly how George was feeling when he quit. I've played in quite a few bands over my life and one thing I've noticed is there is usually a dictator, if not early on but appears down the track a bit.
The last band I was in we had a lead guitarist who decided on things like the set list and how arrangements of songs should be etc etc. Never once thinking to ask "what do you think".. He even got a keyboard player to join without any discission with us.

It drives you a bit mad, and an anger wells up inside and makes you feel pretty horrible. These dictators are relentless and start treating you like a backing band.  If you want to avoid a bit bust up or confrontation you either A) get over it somehow (bite your lip) or B) just quit.

I think we all know Paul was that dictator. I remember a scene in get Back where he is telling Ringo (a quiet person in the studio) how he wants him to drum, you can see the look on Ringo's face, he hates being dictated too and his blood pressure is steadily rising. I know exactly how he felt.

I appreciate that Paul kept the band going and without him there would probably be no Abbey Rd. But I'm not surprised the band broke up after that.

I apologize for the extended prose, but I hope I answered your question "Did any of you know?"

Yes, and thank you for the fine answer.

Yes, I knew.  I experienced all of this first hand, in chronological order as it happened.  Revolver was the first hint as to what was happening.  I was just sixteen at the time.  With Sgt. Pepper's we continued to see their different and distinct musical styles.  The White Album expounded on this.  Yes, we knew something was happening but we just weren't sure what it was.  We wanted to think of them as a band that would take us into the 1970s and beyond.  After all, they were young and reaching the peak of their creativity.  Thanks to Ed Sullivan and David Frost, we got to see them on TV with their Paperback Writer, Rain, Hello Goodbye, and Hey Jude videos.  They certainly looked cohesive enough.  We had Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine movies to reassure us that the band was still viable.  Without the internet and Beatles forums such as this, we had to rely on the news and fan magazines to know what was going on.

In the fall of 1969, we got Abbey Road and for a while we thought everything was okay.  A great LP with a magnificent closing medley! And we just knew they would be around in the following decade.

A pivotal moment for me came in late January 1970.  Come And Get It was playing on my car radio, an MGB which added to the British atmosphere.  I turned to my girlfriend Nancy (yes, I jokingly called her Magill and Lil at times) and said "Listen!  That's a new Beatles song!"  It sure sounded like them.  When the disc jockey said it was Badfinger, we both exclaimed "Who are they?!"

And then came the Let It Be movie and LP.  We knew it was over even with the short exchange between George and Paul..."I'll play it your way...or I won't play it at all."

I apologize for the extended prose, but I hope I answered your question "Did any of you know?"

Just finished watching. Somehow I expected the visuals to be a bit sharper, like they did with Get Back, but I do see the improvement. And the sound is great. I've had a bootleg copy forever but it's been a while since I've watched it, and I've watched Get Back a number of times since then. I agree with someone who said LIB now looks like a trailer for GB. But both stand on their own, of course.

I've always felt that the Paul/George spat should not have been included in LIB. I think that more than anything fueled the idea that the film chronicled impending breakup. It might not have been seen so much as that if it were left out. But boy, was the revelation of George's quitting in GB a shock to me! I'd never known that before. Did any of you know?

Anyway, I'm glad they did this, and I'll probably grab the DVD if and when it comes out.
